I haven’t been to a theater in almost 5 years; I watched a movie at the first showing.

Excited for “Gangs of Wasseypur,” I stood at the ticket counter by 9:45 pm.

The 160-minute long film begins with a shoot-em-up that may be the most authentic shoot-to-kill scene in Hindi cinema.

The film tells the story of the rivalry between different sects of Muslims:

the Kasai, the Qureshi and the Pathan, the Khan and it spans a period of three generations.

In pre-independence Dhanbad, British owned mines start the story.

After independence, these mines pass to a rich landlord who hires an exiled Pathan as his dabang.

He starts to grow too big for his shoes and the landlord kills him,

leading to a series of murders and counter-murders.

The acting by the “star” cast is superb, with Manoj Bajpayee giving a wonderful performance as “Bhiku Mahatrey” in Satya.

The real strength of the film is its dialogues.

The slang makes it seem as if they have been wiretapped.

The conversations seem true to life and I laughed at its vulgarity.

Anurag Kashyap has put his soul into the film and it shows from every frame of the film.

The direction is the best I have seen in Hindi cinema this year and expectations from the second part of this magnum opus will be even higher.

And that is why I, therefore, envy those lucky people at the Cannes Film Festival who, in addition, got to see both parts back to back.

The film ends on a cliffhanger and the prospect of meeting these difficult yet lovable characters a second time left me tempted.
